Leadership Philosophy
"I stand here before you not as a prophet, but as a humble servant of you, the people." Nelson Mandela
Leadership is embedded within everyone. It does not necessarily mean that you need a title attached at the end of their name. Leadership is engaging in your passions and values, and extend them to the people you are leading. Reflecting on my leadership identities, I have identified common values that link them together: love, integrity, and respect. Love is an all-encompassing attribute of who I am and how I want to treat everything I am a part of. Integrity, respect, compassion; those all come easy when you truly want to be a part of something. I believe that people do things for very specific reasons and motivations. When values are applied to leadership capacities, these motivations are shown to be genuine, real, and true to who you are.
Over time, I have really changed my outlook on leadership. When I started getting involved. I wanted the title; the benefits that came along with being in a position of power. However, a leader cannot lead without the people they are leading. A leader is only as strong as the weakest person on the team. This makes every one just as important and/or responsible for the successes and failures of the team as a whole. I believe in this philosophy because I believe in servant leadership. I believe that true leadership is a service to the people you lead, and is never for self gain or importance. I view leadership as a flat surface, with no hierarchy of who is more important. I view leadership as relational over positional because I believe in teamwork. Without teamwork, collaboration, and open minds, nothing new and exciting can be done.
With my future career goals in the field of Hospital Management and Administration. My main job in this role would be to assess the strengths and weaknesses of different aspects of a hospital, and make sure that they are running efficiently for the benefit of the patient. I specifically want to work in a Children's Hospital, as I believe the experience a child has in a hospital setting is vastly different than that of an adult. In this leadership role, I would work with different project teams to streamline patient care to ensure a comfortable hospital stay for children and their families. Working with a team will be the biggest aspect of my future career path, and I believe my leadership philosophy will help me excel in this field. My belief in servant leadership and my passion for this demographic will allow me to maintain altruistic motivations in my career, and really make a difference in people's lives.
